Far-right leader Giorgia Meloni has been nominated as Italy's prime minister. She was nominated on Friday (October 21). Through this, she became Italy's first female head of government.

The first post-fascist 'Brothers of Italy' party since Benito Mussolini won the legislative elections of 25 September. But forming a government required the support of an alliance outside the party. The Brothers of Italy party is Eurosceptic and anti-immigration. Meloni's appointment is a historic event for the eurozone's third-largest economy and the Brothers of Italy party. This party has never been in government before.

Shortly after being named prime minister, Meloni, 45, from Rome, announced the names of his ministers. They will be sworn in before President Sergio Mattarella on Saturday (October 22).

Meloni's Brothers of Italy party won 26 percent of the vote last month. While its allies Forza Italia and the far-right League got eight and nine percent of the vote respectively.

Giorgetti, a former economic development minister, is considered one of the more moderate and pro-European members of Matteo Salvini's League.

The appointment is likely to disappoint Salvini, who was interior minister in 2018 and 2019. She was hoping to serve as home minister again.

The post of interior minister was instead given to a technocrat, Matteo Piantedosi.

A formal process to hand over power from incumbent Prime Minister Draghi to Meloni will be completed on Sunday (October 23) before she leads her first cabinet meeting as prime minister.
