Abdul Latif is the president of Iraq
In Iraq's presidential election, Kurdish politician Abdul Latif Rashid has been elected as the country's new president. Lawmakers elected him president on Thursday (October 13).
According to Al Jazeera news, the presidential election opened the door to the formation of a government and the elimination of political deadlock in the country.
Abdul Latif Rashid studied engineering in the UK. He was the Minister of Water Resources in Iraq from 2003-2010. He will invite the largest coalition within 15 days to form the new government.
Rashid, 78, will now be succeeded by another Kurdish politician and president, Barham Saleh.
Two rounds of voting were held in the presidential election on Thursday. Abdul Rashid got 160 votes in this election. On the other hand, Barham Saleh got 99 votes.
Nine rocket attacks took place in Iraq's Green Zone ahead of the presidential election. Iraq's parliament building is located within this green zone. Several members of the civilian and law enforcement forces were injured in the attack.
Last week also during the voting for the Deputy Speaker in the Parliament of Iraq, there was a rocket attack on the Green Zone. No one claimed responsibility for Thursday's incident.
