100 children die in Indonesia: ban on all cough syrups

In the recent death of 100 children in Indonesia, the country's drug administration has banned all types of cough syrup.

According to the international media BBC, the Indonesian Ministry of Health made this decision within a week of the death of 70 children after drinking cough syrup in Gambia. Indonesia's Ministry of Health said it has

tested several cough syrups containing ingredients that can cause serious kidney damage .

But till now it is not possible to know whether these drugs are exported or locally manufactured.  

Indonesia's Ministry of Health said on Thursday (20 October) that 200 children with severe kidney disease have been found across the country. Those who are at least 5 years old.

Earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert over the death of 70 children in The Gambia from cough syrup. WHO said that the cough syrup made in India had serious kidney damage ingredients.

 

 Indonesia's Ministry of Health says the same ingredients (diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol) have been found in local cough syrups. Budi Gunadi Sadikin, spokesperson for the country's Ministry of Health, said many of the children with kidney disease had taken cough syrup made from this ingredient. But he did not give any information about its number.
