EU plans to sanction Iran for providing drones to Russia
The European Union has decided to impose sanctions against Iran for supplying drones to Russia. This information has been confirmed by the Czech Republic, the current president of the European Council.
EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell's office said the ban could be announced by Thursday (October 20).
For the past few weeks, Kiev has been complaining that Russia is attacking Ukraine with Iranian-made drones. The European Union claims that Iran supplied the drone to Russia.
Iran has completely rejected this demand of Ukraine and the West. On Wednesday, the Iranian government also said in a statement that they have not supplied Russia with any weapons.
However, the European Union has started to impose sanctions against Iran. A high-level closed-door meeting on Iran was held at the United Nations on Wednesday (October 19) at the request of France, the United Kingdom and the United States. The EU decided to impose sanctions after the meeting.
According to the European Union and the United States, Iran cannot sell weapons to Russia according to UN Resolution 2231. This decision was made in 2015. Allegedly, Iran has violated that policy. And that is why sanctions will be imposed against them.
According to a Twitter message from the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union, EU ambassadors have agreed to take action against Iran on the issue of supplying drones to Russia after three days of talks.
