According to a report by The Guardian, La Plecita had its origins in the city of Morelos. The epicenter was 15 km below the surface. Details of the damage are not known yet. One death has been reported so far.

A tsunami warning has been issued in the region. According to the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, sea waves can reach up to 9 feet. Residents have been instructed to evacuate safely.


The quake was felt on a day when Mexico was marking the anniversary of two devastating earthquakes. On September 19, 1985, hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives in an earthquake of magnitude 8 in the country's capital. On the same day in 2017, 370 people died in an earthquake of magnitude 7.1.
