Angela Merkel's team lose again
Former Chancellor Angela Merkel's political party Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has once again lost to the ruling party of Olaf Scholz in the local parliamentary elections in Germany.
On Sunday (October 9), the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of ruling Chancellor Olaf Scholz won the local parliamentary elections in Lower Saxony, one of the country's most important provinces. The party got 33.4 percent of the total votes. In contrast, Friedrich Merz's CDU received 28.1 percent of the vote.
Green Party, another coalition partner, got 14.5 percent of the vote. The ultra-conservative party Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) secured a good place in parliament with 11 percent of the vote.
After counting the votes, 63-year-old Stefan Vail, the main candidate of the province of the Social Democratic Party, said that they have been listening to the people since the beginning. Work has also been done to solve various crises. The great result of the election is a big proof of that. Meanwhile, state CDU chief Beyrond Althusmann has announced his resignation after losing the election.
Although the election is provincial, the energy crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, reining in rising commodity prices, and reducing inflation have been included in the manifestos of political parties.
Earlier in May of this year, the CDU was defeated by Schalz's party SPD in the provincial elections of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
