Zelensky calls for Russia to be brought to justice
The country's President Volodymyr Zelensky has demanded Russia's punishment for military operations in Ukraine. On Wednesday (September 21), he made his speech by attending the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York through video conference. Addressing the heads of state and government, he said, Russia must be punished for the crime of "aggression" in Ukraine.
The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly began on September 19 in New York City, USA. Due to the corona epidemic, the heads of state and government of various countries have joined this global conference for the first time after almost three years. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not attend. Instead, they sent a delegation.
The Ukraine war is taking center stage in the session. The United States and European leaders strongly criticized the country's leaders by blaming Russia for this conflict. Ukrainian President Zelensky addressed the session through video conference from the capital Kiev on Wednesday.
At the beginning of the speech, Zelensky attacked Russia. Blamed Moscow for creating 'catastrophic turmoil' in his country. And for this he called to bring Russia under justice. He said that a special tribunal should be formed to bring Russia to justice and at the same time Russia's veto power in the UN Security Council should be taken away.
According to Zelensky, 'a special tribunal needs to be formed to hold Russia responsible for the illegal occupation of Ukrainian territory and the killing of thousands of people. Moscow must be punished for its crimes. Sanctions against individuals in the country should also continue. Along with that, the power to vote in the UN Security Council should be taken away from Moscow.
According to Al-Jazeera news, at one stage of the speech, the world leaders in the session stood up and greeted Zelensky. Such a scene is very rare in the session of the General Assembly. A few hours before Zelensky's speech, Putin announced the deployment of partial reserve troops in Ukraine. The implementation of his order came into effect from Wednesday (September 21).
Reacting to Putin's announcement, Zelensky said the move shows that the enemy is not interested in peace talks. Putin wants to drown Ukraine in a sea of blood. Meanwhile, the pro-Russian separatist leaders of those regions have decided to hold a referendum in at least four regions occupied by Russia in Ukraine to join Russia. They said that the referendum will be held this week (September 23 to 27).
