Prominent Islamic thinker Yusuf al-Qarjawi has died
Prominent Islamic thinker and chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Yusuf al-Qarjawi, has died. He was 96 when he died on Monday (September 26).
The news of Yusuf al-Qarjawi's death was first shared from his official Twitter handle. However, no further details have been given so far. Yusuf al-Qarjawi's death was confirmed by his son Abdul Rahman Yusuf al-Qarjawi.
Yusuf al-Qarjawi was born on September 9, 1926 in Egypt. He has written more than hundred books on various Islamic subjects, which are widely appreciated among the readers. In addition, he gained worldwide fame with the program called Sharia and Jiban on Al Jazeera television.
Yusuf al-Qarjawi was also a consultant to the Muslim Brotherhood, an international organization based in Egypt. Besides, he was the president of Ittehadul Alami Li Ulmail Muslimeen, an international organization of scholars.
Yusuf al-Qarjawi completed hifz before he was 10 years old. He was second in the whole of Egypt in high school. He received his Honors, Masters and PhD degrees from the Faculty of Usulud Deen, Al-Azhar University. The topic of his PAD was 'Zakat and its impact on solving social problems'.
Early life
Yusuf al-Qarjawi lost his father when he was only two years old. Later his uncle took charge of his studies. He was imprisoned several times due to his involvement with the Ikhwanul Muslimeen. He first traveled to Qatar in 1961. In 1973, he established the Department of Islamic Studies at Qatar University and joined as the Head of the Department.
