Suu Kyi's accomplice sentenced to 173 years in prison in Myanmar
A former parliament member of Myanmar's ousted National League for Democracy (NLD) party has been sentenced to 173 years in prison on terrorism charges. News Al Jazeera.
In the latest verdict, 52-year-old Win Myint Hlaing was sentenced to 148 years in prison by a court in the country. Earlier, he was sentenced to 25 years on various charges.
It is the longest prison sentence handed down to Aung San Suu Kyi and a member of the NLD party since the military seized power in February 2021.
A court in Magwe district, about 480 kilometers (300 miles) north of Yangon, the country's commercial capital, on Monday (Oct 31) convicted Win Myint Hlaing of eight charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act and sentenced him to 148 years in prison, a person familiar with the case said. He said that earlier he was sentenced to 25 years for involvement in incitement and terrorist activities.
Win Myint Hlaing is currently in Magwe prison. Prisoners serving long sentences are kept in this prison. Four political leaders were sentenced to death in Myanmar in July on charges of terrorism and counter-insurgency activities.
In the meantime, Myanmar's ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to 26 years in prison in several cases. However, his supporters claim that these rulings are politically derogatory and prevent him from participating in the elections.
