Strong earthquake in Philippines, widespread damage feared

The Philippines was rocked by a powerful earthquake. Initially, a local hospital was damaged, but extensive damage is feared. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the 6.4-magnitude quake struck near the city of Dolores in the Philippines at 10:59 pm (local time) on Tuesday.

The tremor was felt 330 kilometres (205 miles) away as far as the capital Manila. Al-Jazeera news.

The 200-bed Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital in the city of Batak was the worst hit by the quake. The hospital is located about 60 km north of the epicenter of the earthquake.

During the earthquake, local residents left their homes in panic and took to the streets. Residents of different areas near the epicenter of the earthquake said it was the strongest tremor they had ever experienced.

A local resident said, "I have experienced the longest earthquake. But we are safe. Everyone be safe.

In July, a 7-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines' mountainous Province of Abra, killing 11 people and injuring more than 100 others. In October 2013, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the island of Bohol. More than 200 people died.
