British prime minister election
Can Sunak lose to Boris's strategy?
Rishi Sunak is leading the race to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after the resignation of Liz Truss. But in the meantime, a different news came to light. Boris Johnson has asked Sunak to step down in order to replace Liz Strauss or become the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom again, according to a report in the British media The Telegraph.
Liz Truss succeeded Boris Johnson as British Prime Minister just six weeks ago after defeating Rishi Sunak in the race for the leadership of the Conservative Party. As a result, following the resignation of Truss, former UK finance minister Rishi Sunak is now considered by many political analysts to be the 'logical choice' to become the country's next prime minister.
However, Boris Johnson has taken a different strategy to woo Conservative MPs, according to the Telegraph report. Boris claims that only he can save the party from defeat in the December 2024 national elections.
However, the opposition parties have started demanding early elections citing the loss of popularity of the single majority ruling party in the parliament. According to the Telegraph, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson is putting 'pressure' on Rishi Sunak to step down. However, it is not known whether Sunak has made any comment on this.
Next week is the Conservative Party leadership election. And the final decision in this regard may come by Friday (October 28).
Liz Truss has become the most short-lived Prime Minister in British history after being forced to resign due to rising commodity prices and failure to cut taxes. Truss, who resigned on his 45th day in office, is expected to serve as caretaker prime minister for another week.
Apart from the obvious rivals Rishi Sunak and Boris Johnson, the race for the British Prime Ministership is the leader of the House of Commons, Penny Mordant.
Boris Johnson served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for three years before being ousted by a series of scandals. But he is still very popular with a section of Conservative MPs and the party.
Boris, 58, is more popular than Liz Truss, according to a recent survey by a well-known organization. However, most of the respondents had a negative opinion about Boris Johnson. As a result, all eyes are now on Rishi Sunak.
