Zelensky wants to bring Russia's 'murderers' to justice
President Volodymyr Zelensky wants to bring to justice the "murderers" of Russia who carried out military operations in Ukraine. He presented the request at a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Thursday.
Zelensky addressed the meeting through video conference. In his speech, he emphasized on punishing the "murderers and torturers" of Russia. At the same time, he asked for the provision of more air defense systems to fight against renewed attacks by Russian forces.
Zelensky said it is important to bring criminals to justice to ensure lasting peace in Europe. He added, "We must continue the dialogue to hold Russia as an aggressor state responsible for all the crimes of this war, every act of terrorism, and every Russian killer and torturer."
Zelensky added, 'When these legal mechanisms are established and effective, they will become one of the most powerful mechanisms for ensuring long-term peace.' The leader of Ukraine made a similar request to the United Nations at the end of last September.
The Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) launched its own investigation into the war in Ukraine shortly after the Russian invasion in February. But they also wanted to know where Ukraine is interested in bringing the suspects to trial.
Ukraine may hand over Russian war crimes suspects to the Hague-based court, an ICC lawyer said on Thursday (October 13). Although Moscow is not a member country of this court of The Hague.
On this day, he did not spare his Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), saying that they turned a blind eye when Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine in 2014.
Calling for diplomatic isolation of Russia, Zelensky said he was building 'modern anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems' to protect Ukraine's skies from Russian terrorism.
He said, 'If this is done, it will be a fundamental step towards ending all wars in the near future.' "Europe can take the lead in reparing the damage caused by this war," Zelenskiy said.
