Powerful hurricane hits the island of Puerto Rico
Hurricane Fiona has hit the US island of Puerto Rico. At least 3.3 million people on the island lost power due to the storm. Flight has been cancelled.
Strong Hurricane Fiona hit the island on Sunday (September 18) at noon local time. At that time the wind speed was 85 miles per hour.
Hurricane Fiona made landfall 15 miles south of Mayaguez on Puerto Rico's west coast, the weather service said. The entire island has lost power due to the impact of the hurricane.
Meteorologists fear floods and landslides on the island due to the hurricane. According to Fiona, 12-16 inches of rain could fall under Fiona's influence. There may even be rain across the eastern and southern parts of the island. Flights have already been canceled due to the hurricane. Port operations are closed. Local authorities have announced the closure of government schools and various institutions till Monday to reduce the damage.
Hurricane Fiona could hit the Dominican Republic by Monday (September 19), the Meteorological Department has predicted. US President Joe Biden announced emergency aid after the hurricane hit Puerto Rico.
Meanwhile, authorities have ordered the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people due to the impact of Typhoon Nanmadal in Japan. Heavy floods and landslides are feared in the country due to the typhoon. Trains, ferries and flights have already been cancelled. Meteorologists forecast that after Nanmadal hit the Japanese capital Tokyo, it may gather more strength and cross the country's main island of Honshu by Wednesday.
