Abbas called on Israel to start peace talks immediately

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the issue a day after Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid called for a two-state solution. At the same time, he called on Israel to negotiate peace to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian crisis in his speech at the ongoing 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday (September 23). News Reuters.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid's call for a two-state solution was a "positive step forward".

He added that the true test of Israel's sincerity and credibility in this position is the immediate return of the Israeli government to the negotiating table.

At the UN General Assembly on Thursday (22 September), Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid raised the issue of a two-state solution through an agreement with the Palestinians based on the formation of two states.

The general election in Israel will be held on November 1. In less than a month and a half, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid signaled a two-state solution. This is the first time in several years that an Israeli leader has mentioned a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue at a UN session.

Israel captured East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Palestinians want to build an independent state with these areas. US-backed peace talks between Israel and Palestine collapsed in 2014. Since then, efforts to reach a two-state agreement on coexistence between Israel and Palestine have stalled.
