Russian weapons use to quell protests in Myanmar

The kind of weapons that Russia is using in the Ukraine war, the same kind of weapons are being massacred in Myanmar. Tom Andrews, an expert on human rights in Myanmar, said this at a press conference on Thursday (October 27). He called on the international community to unite and put pressure on Myanmar's military. News from Reuters.

In February last year, Myanmar's military overthrew the government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Many activists including Suu Kyi were imprisoned. Since then, the protests against the military government have been severely suppressed by the country's junta government. It is said that the Myanmar army has killed more than 2 thousand people so far in suppressing the protests. Last week too, many civilians were killed in airstrikes on a rally. It has been alleged that the weapons used in these killings in Myanmar are coming from Russia.

Russia is one of the largest arms suppliers to Myanmar. Russia is one of the countries that supported Myanmar after the military coup in the country in 2021. Myanmar's human rights expert Tom Andrews told the United Nations that people are being killed in Myanmar with the same weapons that Russia is using in the Ukraine war. He told reporters in New York on Thursday. He urged the international community to take action against Myanmar's junta government.

Tom Andrews said the Rohingyas in Rakhine are being persecuted. They spend their days eating and drinking. Children are suffering from malnutrition. A concerted strategy is needed, economic sanctions, arms embargo and tougher action against the junta government is essential.
